Rebecca Grabman, Maker of Monsters, was raised in Alaska, and graduated from Bennington College, Vermont, in 2008. She has a number of fairly useless skills, including but not limited to: making stuffed animals, designing electronically augmented clothing, eating everybody else's leftovers and carving detailed images into linoleum. She has slightly more useful skills, too, like graphic design, but those are less interesting. She is an award-winning mime and loves tropical kitsch. FAQ: How did you come up with the idea for Political Monstrosities? I'd been looking at a lot of data visualization, and I thought, why not take some raw data and convert it into something cuddly? With Bush's presidency coming to a close, it seemed only natural to turn his eight years in office into a study of word use. I ordered a monster... how long until I get it in the mail? That depends on my life and current number of orders. Let's say three weeks. If you need it by a certain date, please contact me and I'll see what I can do. Are people offended by the Monstrosities? Nobody has said anything (yet)! True, I chose which words to highlight but other than that, the content of the project is completely dictated by Bush and his writers. If somebody has a problem with how I've "presented" him or his presidency, take it up with them! How long do they take? Each monster I make takes... about three to six hours, depending on size and complexity, to construct and fill with stuffing. Designing them takes as long as needed: sometimes I sketch many variations before I start, sometimes I just begin sewing. Why the Plaid-ypus? If you haven't figured it out, I love weird looking animals and the platypus is one of the strangest out there. And, hey, tartan is cool! You make bags, too? And monster bags? Can I buy one? Yes, I do! And yes, you can! I don't have a bag section at the moment, but contact me through the order page and let me know what you're interested in. When did you start sewing? At some point in elementary school I started goofing off with fabric and thread. I took about two years of sewing lessons around that time and got a couple of ribbons in local fairs. I stopped for a while, but regained my interest at some point in high school. Since then, I've participated in several college fashion shows and designed costumes for a few small productions. How do I contact you? You can e-mail me, using the address in the right hand column. |
