Motorized Dress
The motorized dress went through several iterations before we settled on this one for the runway show. It began life with fabric and motor tests, to see what could be achieved with a little torque and thread. In the first tests tied one end of a thread to the motor, threaded through a series of pony beads and tied to again at bottom edge of the fabric. Variations on this basic set up allowed us to play with angles and amount of lift. The final design made dramatic use of the mechanism by using light-weight lining fabric and a design with a split down the center to create a "reveal". The orange waistband on the skirt housed a tiny pushbutton, battery and several wires, connected to the motor which was housed in a gold-covered tuna fish can mounted on the back.
